ITCHING TO ASK
What causes dandruff?
Dandruff is caused when three things come together: a fungus found on everyone’s scalp called Malassezia globosa, your scalp oils, and having a scalp sensitive to oleic acid. The fungi Malassezia globosa lives on your dang head, and physiologically breaks down your scalp oils and in doing so produces something called oleic acid. If your scalp is sensitive to oleic acid – which 50% of the world’s population is – your scalp will become irritated and experience dandruff symptoms like itch, a dry scalp or flakes.
But there’s hope! Head & Shoulders has a patented formula that works seven surface layers deep to fight dandruff at its source!
What are the signs of dandruff?
Flakes are the most common visible symptom of dandruff, but there are other symptoms:
One: Itch – this is a common irritation response and usually the first symptom of dandruff before flakes appear.
Two: Redness. Remember scalp is skin, too. Just like the skin on your face turns red when it’s irritated, so does your scalp.
Three: A dry scalp. This can feel tight and uncomfortable because of a weakened moisture barrier.
Four: Flakes. As your scalp tries to shed the irritant that causes dandruff, it sheds skin cells faster than normal, causing buildup that then turns into flakes.
If you have any of these symptoms, treat them with Head & Shoulders! Its patented formula works seven surface layers deep to fight dandruff at its source!
How do I get rid of dandruff permanently?
Unfortunately, you can’t get rid of dandruff permanently, but you can control it! EVERYONE has a fungus on their scalp called Malassezia Globosa. This fungus feeds on sebum and produces an irritant called oleic acid, which 50% of the world’s population are sensitive to. This sensitivity leads to dandruff symptoms like itch, dry scalp or flakes.
Head & Shoulders’ patented formula uses the active Zinc Pyrithione in a unique shape and size which deposits on the scalp and then interacts with fungal cells to reduce the Malassezia fungus.
This reduces the production of that irritant oleic acid and therefore controls dandruff symptoms. So, as long as you’re using Head & Shoulders regularly, you can keep dandruff under control!
Why does my dandruff keep coming back?
Many things can trigger dandruff like stress, hormonal changes or environmental factors BUT one of the main reasons why dandruff can keep coming back is because you’re likely not using an anti-dandruff shampoo regularly.
Dandruff is a recurring condition and is caused by sensitivity to the oleic acid produced by a fungus called Malassezia globosa which lives on EVERYONE's scalp. To keep dandruff under control you have to use an anti-dandruff product regularly.
The key ingredient in Head & Shoulders - zinc pyrithione - protects the scalp against the fungus that causes dandruff. If you switch between an anti-dandruff and cosmetic shampoo, you’re losing the protection on your scalp, so dandruff WILL come back.
For best results, use Head & Shoulders at least twice a week. Its patented formula works seven surface layers deep to treat dandruff at its source!
What causes an itchy scalp?
An itchy scalp is mostly caused by irritation. It’s your body’s way of trying to protect you, and it comes about when receptors on the skin’s surface are triggered, sending a signal to the brain to cause you to react by scratching.
An itchy scalp due to dandruff is caused by a sensitivity to oleic acid, which is a by-product of a fungus we all have on our scalp that feeds on our scalp oil. This causes an irritation and the urge to scratch which can not only cause further irritation, but can also damage hair.
Luckily Head & Shoulders has a patented formula to decrease the fungus and thus the production of oleic acid and stop the itch!
Why is my scalp so dry?
In healthy skin, outer cell layers are like a brick wall. They stand strong to keep the moisture in, so your skin and scalp stays hydrated. But when the scalp becomes irritated due to the formation of dandruff, the moisture barrier slowly starts to weaken causing moisture to escape.Thiscan also cause hair to look dry since oil from the scalp helps condition the hair.
Use Head & Shoulders to treat the root cause of dandruff and restore the scalp’s moisture barrier. After all, they’ve been the scalp expert for over 60 years!
Why does my dandruff get worse in the winter?
Winter itself doesn’t cause dandruff, but there are other common factors that can make an existing problem worse.
For example, central heating warms and dries air around you so if you’re already prone to having a dry, flaky scalp, this can make the problem worse.
Another factor is dry and cold weather which can disrupt your skin’s natural moisture barrier causing your scalp to dry out and feel tight and uncomfortable.
Finally, wearing a hat creates a higher temperature that dandruff-causing fungus thrives in.
To treat dandruff symptoms all year round, use Head & Shoulders regularly and you’ll be set!
What age does dandruff start?
While dandruff can start at any time, many people experience it first in puberty. During teenage years, hormone levels are high, contributing to the body’s production of more oils, including on the scalp.
Malassezia globosa - a fungus EVERYONE has on their scalp – produces oleic acid as a by product from feeding on sebum. If you’re genetically sensitive to it, you’ll experience dandruff symptoms like flakes, itch and a dry scalp.
So when dandruff starts, use Head & Shoulders regularly and at least twice a week. It has a patented formula that works seven surface layers to treat dandruff at its source!
Does dandruff cause hair loss?
Dandruff canaffect hair’s structure and impact the quality of hair. When hair grows in an environment that’s irritated by dandruff, it has more surface disruption and a weaker protein structure which can cause hair to grow in weaken state.Add on an itchy scalp due to dandruff that causes you to scratch, and you have further physical damage and hair breakage.
Maintaining a healthy scalp is important for hair to grow from more stronger and stable roots. Using Head & Shoulders regularly keeps both your hair & scalp healthy!
Why is a healthy scalp important for growing healthy hair?
I want you to visualize your hair like a plant. The scalp is the soil that provides your roots with the healthiest environment. When skin cells become disrupted because of dandruff symptoms, your hair starts to struggle to grow strongly, becoming weak and more prone to breakage.
Growing hair spends two weeks beneath the scalp’s surface, so using Head & Shoulders to treat dandruff symptoms not only creates a healthy scalp environment for healthy hair to grow, it also prevents dandruff from coming back!
